If you have lost your Home Tanning Book you can order another by going to this page:

Kit Refills

If you had read through the book and just need a reminder, here are the basic steps. The book explains each step in detail.

  • Soak up hide in salt water solution
  • Pull hide and let drain
  • Tack hide out on sheet of plywood
  • Use hide scraper to remove any meat, fat, and membrane that remains
  • Lightly salt the hide
  • Mix Tanning Paste and apply to hide
  • Cover with plastic
  • After 24-48 hours remove plastic
  • Use rounded side of hide scraper to remove paste residue
  • Apply Tanning Oil
  • Allow Oil to dry
  • Use Sand Paper to soften hide and create a smooth finish
  • If any paste residue is on the hair side use a damp cloth wipe it off

I recently have received one of your kits. I do find it very informative but yet a little hard to follow. Now here is my situation I have two deer capes that I skinned, fleshed, and salt dried. the question I have is now it is time to soak my hide correct? as mentioned above you said salt water solution now in the kit it says to soak in dish detergent correct. Does the salt water solution mean to leave the salt residue on the cape when soaking in the detergent? I guess I am little lost with directions.

Yes, any salt or salt residue on the hide is fine.  Just put it in the solution to soak it up with a little liquid soap like Dawn dish soap, not detergent.  The solution rehydrates the hide to make it easier to work with and the soap cleans the hair.
