To tan a Beaver hide you will need our 3S Degreaser in addition to the tanning kit.
(We don't sell it on the website but you can call and order it.)

--Beaver Hides contain a lot of oils that need to be removed before the tanning process can begin.--

To tan a beaver hide there are a couple of extra steps...
Wash the hide thoroughly with the degreaser solution.
Then flesh the hide making sure to remove any of the thin membrane remaining.
Now wash the hide again with the degreaser solution.

Now tack the hide out and begin the tanning process as explained in the kit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Will the kit work on rabbits?"

The Kit will work on domestic rabbits, not wild rabbits. Wild rabbits have a very thin skin and require a different tanning technique. We don't currently have a kit for that technique.

Here is a method we use for doing 6 wild rabbits.
(Please remember that you have to be very gentle with them. They will fall apart very easily.)

Required for this method:
2 - TK03 Tanning Crystals Double Pack
1 - TK02 Tanning Oil Bottle
2lbs - Non-Iodized Salt (We recommend Hay & Stock Salt) usually $4.00 for 50 lbs.
1 - 5 Gallon Bucket

Method for 6 Rabbits:

Get a 5 Gallon Bucket
Put in 2 gallons of water, 1.5 lbs of Tanning Crystals, 2 lbs of non-iodized salt
stir it thoroughly and then add the rabbits.

Let the rabbits sit in the solution for 3 days stirring occasionally.

Pull the rabbits out and let them drain for 20-30 min.

now lay them out flat and apply a very light coat of our tanning oil to the flesh side
let them air dry.

The leather side may still be a little stiff which is fine for most uses.

You will still need to be gentle with them. Wild rabbit hides are not very durable even when properly tanned.

--A Little History--
The rabbits used to make garments are the result of 100's of years of selective breeding to produce a fur that is more durable and a hide that can easily be sewn. But even these hides pale in comparison with the durability of other furs such as beaver, mink, raccoon...

The Tanning Crystals are an alum based compound and the Tanning Oil is a water soluble oil specially formulated to cure dry to the touch leaving the hide soft and supple.
