Freezing then salting
« on: November 22, 2008, 08:25:40 AM »

I have a friend that just got his first deer and wants me to tan the hide for him. He can't get it to me for a couple of days, then I can't tan it for a week or so after I get it. Would it be ok if he put it in a freezer for those couple of days, then when I get it I lay it out and salt it? Or should I just put it in my freezer when I get it?

Yes, that should be fine.  Keep a close eye while the hide is thawing so that you can get salt on it as soon as it can lay mostly flat.  As it continues to get softer tug on the sides until it is completely flat.  Now it can be left alone until you are ready to tan it.
