Elk Hide Question
« on: December 12, 2010, 09:28:20 PM »

So I got a huge cow elk. I bought the home tanning kit and followed all the instructions. This hide is big! Over 30 square feet. After scraping the paste off tonight the edges and sides were tanned to a white color but the middle still is brownish, although definitely lighter then before.

When I was applying the paste I ran out of tanning crystals so I went to a pharmacy and bought two cups of Alum mixed it up and used that.

I am wondering if I am ready for the oiling step, or if I should put a wet towel on hide let it soak up, then salt, and repaste for a few days?
